Fair Isle in Spring

Helen Needham visits Fair Isle with musician and composer Inge Thomson collecting sounds and learning about island traditions.

Fair Isle is the most geographically remote inhabited island in the UK but is known the world over for its knitting traditions. Sitting between Orkney and Shetland, migratory birds use it as a stopover and, as a result, it has become an important place for the recording and study of birds. This has also attracted many more people to this tiny island and it remains a thriving community of resilient and creative people. Inge Thomson is a composer and musician originally from Fair Isle. After a break of 8 months, she returns to the island to visit her family in April 2022 accompanied by Helen Needham. Together they explore the island which has inspired so much of Inge’s music, and meet islanders along the way.

Featuring music by Inge Thomson and Chris Stout and Catriona McKay.
