A Joyous Exploration of music, guests and poetry: A guide to the cello

Cerys chats to cellist Christian-Pierre La Marca about the cello as they explore how the instrument is used in different genres. As well as hearing from Irish singer Lisa O'Neill.

Cerys chats to cellist Christian-Pierre La Marca about the history of the cello as they explore how the instrument is used in different genres. Christian-Pierre is an award-winning cello player who won the Gramophone Award for Best Concept Album for Cello 360, in 2022 his concert album Wonderful World was an ode to nature and this year he has released Legacy, a collection of cello pieces by Mozart, Hayden and Porpora.

Cerys also hears from Irish musician Lisa O'Neill about the inspirations behind some of the songs from her new album All Of This Is Chance. The album explores Lisa's love of nature and the relationship with modern society. Lisa covered Bob Dylan's All The Tired Horses for the finale of the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ drama Peaky Blinders. As well as hearing from the ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Concert Orchestra's co-principle cello Miwa Rosa and experimental cellist Gaspar Claus.

As 9 February was St Telio's day, the Welsh patron saint of fruit trees, expect an eclectic mix of songs from a mix of genres related to trees and apples in amongst Cerys' favourite new records from around the world, including tracks from Baaba Maal, Kay Young and Jeembaa Groove.
