Yann Gourdon and Uwalmassa in session

Jennifer Lucy Allan shares the fruits of our latest remote improvised collaboration session, between French hurdy-gurdy player Yann Gourdon and Indonesian collective Uwalmassa.

Jennifer Lucy Allan shares the fruits of our latest remote improvised collaboration session, between French hurdy-gurdy player and sound artist Yann Gourdon and trance-inducing Indonesian collective Uwalmassa.

One third of the drone trio France and part of the La N¨°via collective, Yann Gourdon learned to play the traditional music of the Auvergne on the hurdy-gurdy - a string instrument that uses a hand-cranked rosined wheel to produce sustained tones - by studying archive field recordings. Influenced by the relationship with his land and its history, Gourdon also focuses on acoustic phenomena and dynamic connections with the environment.

The French artist will combine forces with Uwalmassa, a sonic exploration project initiated by DIVISI62, the sound and visual arts label based in Jakarta that examines questions of Indonesian identity within a global context. In their work, Uwalmassa explore polyrhythmic compositions and experiment by taking apart and reassembling the structures of traditional Javanese gamelan music.

Elsewhere in the show, out-rock of guitar and drums from a new release by Manchester duo Yerba Mansa and sketched sound collages by American artist Vanessa Rosetto. Plus Japanese musician Kaminumada Yohji improvises around a Comus track and London poet and rapper Nadeem Din Gabisi performs a song from last year's standout album POOL.
