Building the Red Wall - Episode Two
As Wales build up to their first appearance at a World Cup in 60 years, Cerys Matthews meets the characters behind Welsh football’s Red Wall.
Final part of a two-part documentary - Wales have qualified for their first World Cup in 64 years and a new generation of players and fans have finally reached the promised land. Their wildest dreams have come true thanks to the players on the pitch. and the fans in the stands.
Cerys Matthews explores The Red Wall, as it has become affectionately known. The pride and joy of Welsh football with a fan culture like no other - inclusive, supportive, award winning, non-combative, proud, loud and wearing bucket hats. Lots of bucket hats.
Football, mixed with politics and music in Cymraeg and English, has created a new, younger, more confident national identity for Wales.
This national pride has been developed not just on the pitch at the Cardiff City Stadium thanks to the exploits of Bale and co, nor in the boardroom at the FAW as they dreamt up the Together Stronger campaign, but on the terraces, in the back rooms of pubs, bedrooms, far flung European destinations and in the hearts of those fans who despite years of disappointment and near misses make up The Red Wall.
This is the story of those men and women who have built this mighty wall brick by brick over the last 20 years and well before that sense of pride came from results on the pitch.
This is the story of how The Red Wall was built by the fans, and resonated with nations around the world. And despite it all... Yma O Hyd.
