Egged on by the Press?

The role played by right-wing newspapers in Truss' mini-budget.

β€œAt last! A true Tory budget”, proclaimed The Daily Mail after the mini-budget. Four weeks on and a very different tone: β€œIn office but not in power”, was the front page this Tuesday.

So what exactly is Liz Truss’ relationship with Britain’s press? Was she really β€œegged on” by the media, as some of her critics claim, to do what she did in the disastrous mini-budget? And if the opinion polls are to be believed – with her party apparently heading for oblivion at a general election – might traditional Tory papers switch allegiance?
