Thursday - Vaughan Williams 150: Purcell, inspiration

Purcell's Dido and Aeneas with Sofi Jeannin and the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Singers, plus music by Vaughan Williams, Tippett and Gipps.

Ian Skelly introduces another afternoon of music as part of Radio 3's 150th anniversary celebrations of Ralph Vaughan Williams, with live recordings of music by the composers himself alongside those who influenced him, his contemporaries and students.

Today at 3pm, Sofi Jeannin conducts the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Singers in Dido and Aeneas by Purcell, one of the English composers most admired by Vaughan Williams. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Philharmonic and Rumon Gamba present new recordings of works by one of his students at the Royal College of Music, Ruth Gipps, and the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scottish Symphony Orchestra play music by his contemporary Michael Tippett.
