From the New York Met: a devastating tragedy set in a French convent during the Revolution, starring Ailyn PeΜrez, Sabine Devieilhe, Alice Coote, Christine Goerke and Jamie Barton. Poulenc's masterpiece is inspired by the true story of the Carmelite sisters of CompiΓ¨gne in northern France, who were guillotined in Paris during the Reign of Terror in 1794 for refusing to renounce their faith. But the emotional heart of the opera is the fictional character of Blanche de la Force, the timid young aristocratic nun whose faith wavers but who finally finds the courage to die with her sisters.
