Anneka Rice celebrates the life of a national treasure

Anneka Rice celebrates the life of one of one our most beloved and versatile entertainers Bernard Cribbins, who provided the background to many of our childhoods.

In his autobiography, Bernard Cribbins described himself as a character actor, a fisherman, a former paratrooper, a catwalk model and purveyor of the odd story. Well, for the next two hours, Anneka Rice will discover he was so much more than that. She will look back over his incredibly varied career which spanned three quarters of a century in interviews with Steve Wright, Graham Norton, Aled Jones and his long-time producer Martin Jenkins, among many others.

Bernard died last week, and with his passing we lost one of the country’s best loved storytellers. He provided the voices for The Wombles, Buzby and Tufty, and brought a record-breaking amount of characters to life in 'Jackanory'. He starred in everything from Shakespeare to 'Carry On' films, was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and produced by George Martin. He was the only actor to star opposite three different versions of The Doctor in three different platforms: with Paul McGann on the radio in 'The Horror of Glam Rock', in the 1966 film 'Daleks: Invasion Earth - 2150 AD' with Peter Cushing and four decades years later with David Tennant on the television, in some of Tennant's final episodes as the Time Lord.

He played the touching porter Albert Perks in 'The Railway Children', starred opposite Peter Sellers and David Niven and more recently provided the title character in the CBeebies series 'Old Jack’s Boat'. And who could forget his appearance as pretentious hotel guest Mr Hutchinson in the classic Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ sitcom 'Fawlty Towers'?

Be prepared for musical merriment and memories of the beloved Bernard Cribbins OBE.
