Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I was convinced I was immune, strong, determined, healthy.  My husband succumbed not just once, but twice.  My daughter, sister, son and of course endless friends have been smitten.  In fact an analysis of our extended family revealed that of 29 of us,  66% had gone down at least once,  frequently twice to the dreaded, evolving, ‘much as we prefer to think otherwise’, still here, and so wrongly dated, covid 19. Yes I had been coughing, but the Lateral Flow resolutely showed one, not two lines so with eager anticipation, I continued to plan for seder night, the big family celebration of the start of Passover, and a trip away over the easter weekend.   Preparing for Passover, for Jewish women in particular, is a true labour of love with assiduous cleaning, shopping, inviting, and, inevitably, cooking.

Whilst domestically somewhat challenged, I had made a determined start.  I’d invited my sister-in-law’s family to join us and my admittedly excessive online food order had arrived.  And then it happened, a positive test, just hours before the start of arguably the central Jewish family event of the year. Disappointment is something I don’t manage well.  I tend to be upbeat and positive but covid, as so many people have learned, is riddled with loss, isolation, frustration and sadness.  It can’t be controlled, it’s frightening, and at that moment,  the festival and trip, after two missed years of lockdown, disappeared in that second tiny red line.

We held a short zoom early Seder, and my family went away as planned, just without me.  I allowed myself several days to wallow at home,  binge watching TV, starting to categorise 13 years of unsorted photos,  and munching my way through the ingredients for the uncooked Seder meal. Tonight, two weeks on,  I am going out for dinner.  It’s my birthday which I share with my mum – 155 years of life, many documented in those newly sorted photos.  I can’t predict the downs but I’m celebrating every moment of this up. Preparing for festivals is important, but being together with my family, whatever the excuse, is the truest and most meaningful labour. It is, my labour of love.
