Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

So Zoe, and as I often do, I start my story with food.听听In this case, creamy humus, tahini, rich aubergine dip and sliced, sweet, pickled cucumbers all authentic and home-made - the familiar food of my Jewish upbringing. Except it wasn鈥檛. This was an Iftar meal, traditionally eaten after a day of fasting at Ramadan, and generously served to guests from all faiths and backgrounds last week at a mosque in London. Ramadan, the holy month of reflection, fasting and giving to charity, is central to Islam and, I鈥檓 actually rather honoured to say, these community iftar meals have come to punctuate and enrich听my听year too, spiritually as well as calorifically.

It wasn鈥檛 just the food that felt familiar 鈥 the volunteers heaping hospitality, the sense of purpose, and the building brimming with people and chatter, could have been a church, gurdwara, temple, or yes even a synagogue. At Alyth Synagogue鈥檚 ninth annual interfaith iftar, like at the Mosque, tables were laden with hummus and salads, and the place oozed with that warm, volunteer-led hospitality. True, it felt very different 鈥 to have an imam reciting the call to prayer in a synagogue is most certainly counter-cultural - but that very dissimilarity was uplifting.听听It stimulated discussion, questions, conversation and the sharing of knowledge and ideas.听

Whilst Muslims have been marking Ramadan, this past week Jews have celebrated the start of Passover, Christians marked Easter, Sikhs Vaisakhi with street processions, and Hindus, Navaratri - a full festival frenzy.听听Each has offered the potential to learn something new and entrancing, be-it through visiting, listening or of course, eating. 鈥淲hat makes us different is who we are,鈥 wrote the late Chief Rabbi, Lord Jonathan Sacks.听听But, he added, 鈥渨hat unites us is what we do.鈥滱s I turn my attention to the festival of Passover this 鈥榝ull monty鈥 weekend, I鈥檓 aware of the challenges of difference and diversity.听听We are not all the same.听听However, I know that the simple act of opening our doors and sharing just a tiny taste of our festivals, awakens opportunities and offers new, definitely delicious, possibilities.听
