Kirsty Lang is in the chair as the notorious quiz of lateral thinking and cryptic connections returns.

(1/12)
How have a Taiwanese violinist, a Spanish waiter and Prospero's daughter joined forces to popularise the largest city in Waikato? With this, the new season of the long-running cryptic quiz begins, celebrating no less than 75 years as a regular fixture on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio. The opening contest is between the teams from The Midlands and Wales. Kirsty Lang is in the chair and will be awarding and deducting points according to how much help the teams need with the programme's famously difficult questions.

Taking part are Stephen Maddock and Frankie Fanko for The Midlands, opposite Myfanwy Alexander and David Edwards for Wales.

Questions in today's programme

Q1Β  How have a Taiwanese violinist, a Spanish waiter and Prospero's daughter joined forces to popularise the largest city in Waikato?
Q2 (from Phil Rustage)Β  What kind of group would you be in if Titania's ass, Cumberbatch's marvellous doctor and a Victorian doctor who gave his name to a syndrome, accompanied you in the direction of Peter Docter, and you ended up in Braine's room uttering a magic spell?Β
Q3 (from Alan Poulton) Music: How could these be said to have brought about a mass exit?
Q4 (from Andy Lee)Β  Why might you regret it if you let go of Elton's dancer, a sporting Gladstone and a short-lived car model made by Morris?
Q5 (from Malcolm Ruthven)Β  How did these people find themselves similarly displaced: Jerry Mulligan, Isabella, Quentin Crisp and the 37th President of the United States?Β
Q6 (from Sarah Rowland Jones) Music: Why do these three pieces recall a comment of Dorothy Parker's, and about whom did she make it?Β
Q7Β  How might a wooden foot, a preventative conjunction, Ko-Ko's proudest possession and a Shephard on an island lead you gradually towards deadly sin?
Q8 (from Michael Hipkins)Β  How might you arrange the following: an altered state of consciousness; ten Metro tickets; the 1955 memoir of George Psychoundakis; an aqueous solution of fructose, glucose and sucrose; and a three-beat gait? And how did Galileo respond in 1633?

This week's teaser question

Where might you repair to if you looked to the Occident and found a Scottish place of worship, a collection of sharp objects and a central depression, located alongside an antipodean street?
There are no prizes so don't write to us with the answer - but you can see if you're right when we reveal the solution next time.Β
