DJ and electronic musician LCY is Tom Ravenscroft’s latest guest to Peel Acres; the home of his dad, former ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ radio DJ John Peel, and his legendary music collection.

John’s broadcasting career spanned five decades, until his death in 2004, over which time he meticulously catalogued tens of thousands of records.

Presented by Tom Ravenscroft
Produced by Kevin Core and Becca Bryers

Track 1: On The Corner - Miles Davis (from On The Corner)
LCY’s first pick is from jazz trumpeter and bandleader Miles Davis. He’d conceived the album as an attempt to reconnect with the young American audience, who by the early 70s had largely were largely choosing funk and rock music over jazz. The LP was initially panned my many jazz critics, but has since been reappraised and is now considered to be musically ahead of its time.

Track 2: Art School - The Jam (from In The City)
They next pull out the 1977 debut album by mod revival and punk rockers The Jam. The band launched the career of β€œThe Modfather” Paul Weller, who went on to form the Style Council and later had a successful solo career.

Track 3: Warped 2 - Digital (from DubZilla)
Digital, aka Steve Carr, is a drum and bass artist - and fellow Suffolk-dweller, whose interest in music comes from seeing his dad play his own sound system. This 2002 album was release on five 12” vinyls - and John Peel declared it one of his albums of the month on release.

Bonus Track: Icarus - Madeon
Professor Nikki Dibben from the University of Sheffield conducted the first study investigating physiological responses to electronic dance music - and shares her findings with Tom. Icarus was the track used in the study that was associated with the strongest β€œpeak” experience - largely due to its breakdown, build-up, drop structure.

Track 4: Jump Around (Remix) - Slippery Project (from the Absolute Hardcore compilation)
Slippery Project, aka Slipmatt, aka Matthew Nelson is a DJ and producer, who was one of the key figures in the development of UK rave, jungle and happy hardcore. This three-disc compilation was a 1998 release for London label Slammin’ Vinyl.

Track 5: You Make Me Sick - The Disturbed (from Totalled Volvo)
This was a 1987 release from US punk rock band The Disturbed. Despite the EP’s title, the photo on the sleeve appears to show the band posing in from of a VW Beetle. The band only released one album, but bassist Dave Wilder is now a Grammy nominated songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist - who co-wrote the Macy Gray’s hit song, I Try.

Track 6: Skate For The Devil - The Boneless Ones
LCY pulls out another wildcard selection in the form of the first - and only - full length release from US skate rockers The Boneless Ones. The band were only active between ’84 and ’87… but reformed in 2019 with the promise of new music.

Track 7: Living For The Future - Omni Trio
LCY’s final track is a 12” from electronic artist Omni Trio, aka Rob Haigh - who in the 90s developed a unique style, known as ambient drum and bass. This single was released on UK label, loved by both Tom and LCY; Moving Shadow.
