Ross Kemp and The QI Elves

Zoe chats to Ross Kemp about his brand new Â鶹ԼÅÄ game show 'Bridge of Lies', plus it's The Why Workshop, and Zoe quizzes the QI Elves with more of YOUR questions!

Ross Kemp is on the show, and he's got a brand new game show coming to our tele boxes next Monday evening, on Â鶹ԼÅÄ One. 'Bridge Of Lies' will see teams of contestants compete for cash by crossing 'the Bridge' – a collection of stepping stones featuring various truths and lies based on general knowledge categories. Each player must try to safely step on the truths and avoid the lies, or risk falling off and out of the game.

It's Wednesday, and you know what that means - the QI Elves are back with The Why Workshop, and Zoe quizzes them with more of YOUR questions!

Along with Clare Runacres on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Mike Williams on sport, she and the team have the best start to your morning.

There's also a daily Pause For Thought from Harvey Belovski, plus texts, emails and voice notes, as Zoe entertains the nation with fun for the family!

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

All of us are thinking daily about the awful situation in Ukraine.ÌýÌýI want to particularly mention the Jewish community of Zaparozhe in the east, which I’ve visited twice and is twinned with my community in Golders Green.ÌýÌýSending our love, support and hopes for peace very soon to you and to everyone affected.ÌýToday is the anniversary of the death of the greatest figure of the Jewish Bible - Moses, the man who led the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land.ÌýWhile we might knowÌýwhenÌýMoses died, the Bible goes out of its way to tell us that we will never knowÌýwhereÌýhe was buried.ÌýÌýThe great French Rabbi Levi ben Gershon explained that if people knew where Moses was buried, they would end up worshipping his grave instead of God, so best to keep the location concealed.Ìý

Ìý

I’ve thought about Rabbi Levi’s idea often, as I believe it’s something we can all relate to.ÌýÌýIt would be hard not to notice the cult of the person all around us.ÌýÌýFor whatever reason, we are mesmerised by the lives, interests and pronouncements of sports stars, musicians, actors and other celebrities.ÌýÌýSometimes they are even religious leaders, although I’m yet to be mobbedÌýen routeÌýto my synagogue by screaming fans.ÌýOf course, some of these people have made outstanding contributions to society, but they are still human beings, with the same strengths and weaknesses that affect us all.ÌýÌýRabbi Levi’s idea helps us avoid idolising any human being, even a Moses, whose grave we cannot visit.ÌýÌýWe forget at our peril that he was a messenger for God’s word and not a god himself.

Ìý

Judaism often emphasises time instead of a place, so we have a date, today, rather to mark the passing of Moses.ÌýÌýIn most years, Jewish communities use today to thank an extraordinary group of people.ÌýÌýThey are called Chevra Kadisha – holy society; every functional Jewish community has one.ÌýÌýTheir job is not for the fainthearted, but it’s act of love – they wash and dress for burial those who have passed away. Oddly, the dinner that follows their day of reflection is entertaining and frequently a little irreverent.ÌýÌýOver the years, I’ve spoken at a few of these events and they can be very enjoyable; in fact some of my best sermon jokes were road-tested at Chevra Kadisha dinners.ÌýÌýThis is often known as ‘gallows humour’ – a way of coping with the tough stuff the Chevra deal with. Being able to laugh at the absurdity of existence is another way to celebrate life while avoiding the cult of the person – we are all equal in death, and therefore, in life.
