Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

It’s Shrove Tuesday morning and I am already flexing my wrists in anticipation of an evening of freshly flipped pancakes with my friends and family. I don’t know why pancakes taste so much better on Pancake Day than any other day of the year, but it’s a well-loved tradition in our house. The children, high on sugar and lemon, cheer as their fried discs spin towards the ceiling and (hopefully) down again, scream as the hot buttery fog in the kitchen sets the smoke alarm off (again) and parade increasingly crazier combinations of filling. The adults take turns at the stove until eventually everyone declares themselves so full they’ll never eat sugar again.

Stuffing yourself full of pancakes ahead of weeks of not stuffing yourself with chocolate is not a practice found anywhere in the Bible. But Shrove Tuesday does have ancient church roots. It is a day for thinking about our souls as well as our bodies, a day for celebration as well as self-reflection, seeking forgiveness from God and praying for those facing difficulties in their lives. The tradition is marked all around the world wherever there is a Christian heritage or community.Β

This year, in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, our family will be making syrniki pancakes made with ricotta cheese and vanilla, served with sour cream and various sweet toppings. Pancake celebrations in Ukraine, known as Maslenitsa, usually last for a week, and mark the end of winter as well as the beginning of Lent. Yesterday I spoke to a friend of mine in Ukraine. There’ll be no pancakes for his family this year while his city is being bombed but he asked me to pray for his town and country. Simple food will have to suffice as they wait to mark not only the end of winter but the end of war. As my family and I remember Ukrainians today with prayers and pancakes and whatever practical support we can offer, I hope that my children will be filled not only with sugar, but with a sense of solidarity with those suffering in war zones around the world. We will feast and then we will fast in the hope that peace can one day soon be resurrected.
