A reflection and prayer to start the day with the Rev Dr Stephen Wigley, Chair of the Wales Synod of the Methodist Church.

Good morning. This weekend marks the opening fixtures in the Rugby 6 Nations championship. Wales, as defending champions, are travelling to Dublin to take on Ireland later this afternoon, and there’s been the usual discussion about who’s in each squad and what the team selection will be. However, after months of travel restrictions and covid passports, in recent weeks there’s been almost as much attention focused on the crowds; who can travel, how many can attend and under what restrictions? In part this reflects the recognition that rugby internationals are simply not the same without the atmosphere of a capacity crowd. But it’s also a recognition that such international sporting events have become cultural events in their own right – and as such make a significant contribution to the local economy and hospitality industry.

Anyone who’s been in Cardiff on a match day or travelled to Murrayfield or made the spring trip to Paris can attest to the life and excitement such gatherings can bring; and given the impact of lock-downs over the Christmas period, perhaps it’s not surprising that the decision has been taken to relax the restrictions on major sporting events just as the rugby gets underway and it’s time for the home fixtures. The glory of the 6 Nations is that we all have an interest in at least one of the teams and how the tournament goes. But equally, we all recognise the value of those occasions which allow people to come together to celebrate in that friendly rivalry which is part of our heritage – and that remains true whatever the result this afternoon.

Almighty God,
The Bible shares a vision of heaven which is of a great crowd that no-one can number drawn from every place under the sun; help us to celebrate those opportunities which draw us together and enable us to share in those rich traditions which build up our common heritage.
For the sake of your kingdom, Amen.
