Yola - Grammy nominated singer songwriter - picks the Tracks of My Years all week with Ken. Born in Bristol, Yola's first gigs were primarily in the jazz and rock music genres. She spent time in her early career as a front woman for hire and feature vocalist for DJ/producers such as Bugz in the Attic and Massive Attack.
Yola released her first solo EP, 'Orphan Offering', in 2016. In February 2019, she released her debut album 'Walk Through Fire' to much acclaim, including four Grammy nominations. Her brand new single 'Dancing Away In Tears' is out now, taken from her latest album 'Stand For Myself' which has received two Grammy nominations. She also received nominations for Best Americana Album - 'Stand For Myself', and Best American Roots Song - 'Diamond Studded Shoes'', bringing the rising star’s total Grammy nominations to six.
Yola has recently announced an exclusive UK headline show at legendary London venue KOKO for July 2022. Her homecoming concert will follow a major US headline run spanning more than 40 dates, and mark Yola’s anticipated return to the UK live stage as her first UK performance since 2019.
Yola returned to the UK in late November to perform on both Radio 2's Jo Whiley Show and then on The Graham Norton Show on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One. Yola will also feature as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama 'Elvis' set for release in June next year, which explores the life of Elvis Presley, played by Austin Butler, alongside Tom Hanks, Kelvin Harrison Jr and Alton Mason.
The next two tracks Yola has chosen come from The O'Jays and Tina Turner. Ken also has your love song dedications plus another round of PopMaster. If you'd like to get in touch with the show email Ken.Bruce@bbc.co.uk
