Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

There is an item of food that I think is one of the most useful in the world.听听No, I鈥檓 not going to talk about the wonders of porridge, which is indeed wondrous!, or, why some fruit or other is packed full of vitamins, or minerals or 鈥 magic.听听No, no, the most useful 鈥 and indeed the most spiritual spiritual - food in the world is.....a meringue!听听听A meringue?听听(At this point everyone in Glasgow has just shouted at the radio, 鈥淣o, yer not wrang, yer right!鈥澨齛hh the traditional Glasgow pantomime jest!)听听But it is an amazing food!听听I鈥檒l tell you why I love a meringue.听听

I was at a meeting with lots of ministers and priests from all sorts of different churches who were about to discuss some pretty heavy theology - the kind that we usually disagree on. Now I don't know if it was yet another example of Glasgow humour, but the host served everyone a meringue - and the reason it's so spiritual is because you just cannot eat a meringue with dignity!听听The crumbs fall over your good suit 鈥 which was really tough on my Catholic colleagues because they wear black.听听The cream ends up on your chin, you drop bits on the floor and have to apologise, one guy鈥檚 meringue effectively exploded when he bit into it and he even ended up with some in his hair!听听So, after we had all made ourselves look thoroughly stupid, we could then discuss our differences with a bit of humility.

I have kept this at the back of my mind over the years, because there are loads of times that I end up disagreeing with folk, especially about beliefs.听听And that鈥檚 when I tell myself not to stand on my dignity 鈥 which is a pretty slippery place to stand 鈥 and to just eat some spiritual food: we all know about humble pie, but I鈥檝e got the Glasgow version.听听鈥淎m ah wrang?鈥澨淣o your right, Alan!鈥澨齋orry...
