January on the veg plot, pricey perennials for pennies and tree of the month.

David Maxwell presents the weekly gardening programme including; the winter veg plot with Biruk Sahle, pricey perennials for pennies and Tony Kirkham’s tree of the month.

This week, David Maxwell meets Biruk Sahle who after moving to Northern Ireland from Ethiopia in 2014, has now taken on a 1 acre walled vegetable garden in Helen’s Bay. He shows David what’s ticking over during winter and how he is preparing for the growing season ahead. Ann Fitzsimmons shows how a cheap packet of seeds can save gardeners a fortune when it comes to often pricey perennials and the first in a new series on trees. Tony Kirkham of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew picks the Paperbark Maple as his tree for January. David will also be joined live by Claire Woods and Maurice Parkinson to take questions from listeners. Email – gardenerscorner@bbc.co.uk
