A joyous escape via music, guests and poetry: Walking the world
Cerys handpicks you an eclectic Sunday selection of blues, folk, funk, jazz and beats. Cerys catches up with Paul Salopek in China on his Out of Eden walk.
Cerys handpicks you an eclectic Sunday selection of blues, folk, funk, jazz and beats. This week her selection includes Bonobo, Albert Ayler, Warmduscher, Sault and Betty Davis. She also adds a smattering of Disco from The Bee Gees, Chic and Christy Essien in honour of 6 Music's Desert Island Disco All Dayer.
This week Cerys catches up with journalist and writer Paul Salopek who is walking from Africa to the tip of South America, retracing the path our human ancestors took. After stopping in Myanmar during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Paul is continuing his walk through China.
On the 15th anniversary of Alice Coltrane's passing, poet Nisha Ramayya reads her poems inspired by her music, which leads Cerys to dig into the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Archives for Alice's voice.
Plus Cerys pays tribute to the late Ronnie Spector, lead singer of The Ronettes, the 1960s vocal trio who had hits with Be My Baby and Baby I Love You. Ronnie's friend Vicki Wickham recalls working on the TV show Ready, Steady, Go which launched The Ronettes' career in the UK and we hear in Ronnie's own words how she learnt to sing and performing a Ray Charles classic at New York's Peppermint Lounge Disco where they were discovered.
