Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

How are you doing? I’m tired. I’ve been trying to do some exercise, stay off the booze and eat well, but ten days into the New Year and it's really hard going. My knees hurt.ÌýI could use a drink.ÌýAnd I do love cake. It’s dawning on me - as it does this time every year - that I might never be in the shape that all the pushers of workouts, diets and detoxes tell me I should be.ÌýI’m going to fail again, in their eyes.

Ìý

Which is too much like my schooldays, when I really wanted to be good at football but wasn’t, and the teachers put all the so-called no-hopers in a team and made us play the cool kids. It was horrible. Humiliating. And it sort of happened again the last time I tried to get fit for a New Year by playing five-a-side, when I found myself in a team of knackered, wheezy geezers 4-0 down to blokes who had clearly been players in their day.ÌýLong-hidden emotions came flooding back. There were tears, Zoe. Then something beautiful happened. The referee said that was not the final score,Ìýbecause this was a new kind of leagueÌýlike weightwatchers with a ball. We'd been weighed before we played and would be given goals according to how much we’d lost in a week. Four goals, for us. They got none. So it was actually four-four. We’d got a draw. We jumped around like we’d won the Champions League, and what did the others do?

Ìý

They laughed and applauded, because we'd got to know and love each other a bit and there were new rules now. The Bible says there is no rich or poor when you’re standing before God.ÌýEveryone is equal.ÌýSo it suggests to me we should love each other equally. And when we dare to do so,Ìýthe rules of the world are turned upside down. Or as Jesus told his mates: the first shall be last and the last shall be first.ÌýSo when I feel like I’m 4-0 down again, tired and hurting, failing somebody else's ideal, I try to remember: I don’t have to play by those rules any more,Ìýbecause I believe each of us is loved and loveableÌýand love evens up the score.
