What we’re gonna do is go back, way back, back into time… to 1972 this week.

Fifty years have passed since this truly vibrant period in music, so let’s celebrate it!

This was the era that Glam Rock started to take shape as Roxy Music made their chart debut with an instant classic, Marc Bolan built on his enormous success the previous year, Alice Cooper arrived on Top Of The Pops and then caused outrage with his elaborate stage show, and 25-year-old David Bowie recorded a four-song session for Johnnie’s lunchtime Radio 1 show, oblivious to the cultural impact he was about have on impressionable kids and teens across the land.

Geordie boys Lindisfarne had one of the year’s biggest and best-loved albums, the UK’s first no.1 synth hit was brought to us when Chicory Tip covered a Giorgio Moroder song, and an instrumental funk classic helped Isaac Hayes bag an Oscar.

There was room on the chart for plenty of old-timers too including Elvis, Johnny Cash, The Drifters, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Plus, The Carpenters took easy-listening into a whole new realm when young Tony Peluso picked up his electric guitar to deliver a solo that divided Karen and Richard’s loyal fans.

Johnnie’s going to expertly guide you through this wonderful twelve months in rock and pop with stories and events from This Year In Music, and Sounds of the 70s listener Jim Sharp selects a soul classic as our first addition to Johnnie’s Jukebox for this new year.
