Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

As we approach the of the year, I guess it’s normal to reflect on 2021, and what the days of 2022 may bring.

It strikes me that life is full of firsts and lasts – and sometimes we don’t even recognise the importance of an event in the moment:  I don’t remember the last time my now grown-up daughter fell asleep on my lap and I carried her upstairs and tucked her into bed. I didn’t note the last time I read her to sleep with her favourite book.

If I had realised that I would never know those moments again, would I have been more attentive?

If each moment was infused with the power of firsts and lasts, would our lives be richer?

If the scarcity of our time on Earth was truly understood, how would we live differently?

I grew up with my Mum quoting the quip: “Live every day as if it will be your last. One day you’ll be right.â€Â

It’s accurate but is it possible? If a day was my last day on earth I wouldn’t be doing the washing up, but on a day to day basis that needs to be done.

Imbuing our time with significance is important, but there is also a certain practicality needed.

How do balance that? To recognise the importance and indeed scarcity of every moment?

In reality, every second of our lives is the first time we have lived that second, as well as the last time we have lived that second. We live in an ever-present existence of firsts and lasts. We miss them before we even realise they are there.

So perhaps the point is striving to be present in that exact moment. Different religious traditions reflect on it… mindfulness, consciousness, awareness… all a calling to live truly in the moment, to be aware of The Presence.

The Bible describes God as the Alpha and the Omega – the first and the last. The Qur’an speaks of God as our Source and our End – our first and our last.

So as we live these last days of 2021 and look ahead to what 2022 begins, I shall make no resolutions, other than to strive to live in the present of every single moment.
