A reflection and prayer to start the day with Catherine De Souza, Senior Leader of City Church in Cardiff.

Good morning. On this day in 1903 the Wright Brothers made history with the first powered aircraft flight. In 1969 Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon. Just 66 years between these monumental feats shows how rapidly technology had developed. On his trip to space Armstrong took souvenirs from the Wright Brothers’ plane - a small piece of wood and a scrap of muslin. In what was a wonderful symbol of the significance of that first ever flight in 1903, Armstrong showed what an inspiration the Wright brothers were to so many who came after them.

The inspiration of others can play a big part in the lives of many people. Whether it’s a mentor who has guided, a family member who has shown how to live well, or someone in history who broke barriers and made a difference, we can all learn from someone who has gone before us.

In the Bible the apostle Paul said β€œFollow me as I follow Christ”. He was saying to the church in Corinth that just as he was following the example of Jesus, so they could learn from his example. Paul hoped to inspire them in living as God had called them to live and that by observing Paul’s life and teaching, they too could learn more about what it means to be a follower of Christ.

One of the wonderful things about a church family is there are people at all ages and stages of life, and that includes different stages on their journey with God. In a church family each person gets to benefit from the experience and example of others around them.

God, thank you that we can be inspired by the example of others in how to follow you wholeheartedly. Help us not only to follow the example of others but to also set an example of what being a committed Christian looks like. Amen.
