Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

The Blue Marble is one of the most famous photos ever taken.ÌýÌýIt’s an image of the earth from 18000 miles away.ÌýÌýAnd it makes our huge, diverse earth, look, well like, a blue marble covered in white swirls, the cloud formations over the continents. The picture was taken by the crew of Apollo 17 on 7thÌýDecember, 49 years ago today, on what turned out to be the final manned mission to the moon. I believe that the lasting appeal of the Blue Marble lies in a natural tension.ÌýÌýWe all like to feel that our lives are purposeful and that we can make a meaningful contribution to the world that people will remember when we’re no longer here.ÌýÌýYet we also know that we are tiny specs in a colossal universe.

Ìý

The Blue Marble photo highlights our smallness, as well as our abilities.ÌýÌýAfter all, we were able to build the spaceship from which the image was taken, demonstrating incredible mastery of the physical world. Jewish thinkers discuss this paradox. It appears in our prayers on the holiest day of the year Yom Kippur just as the day ends.ÌýÌýThe author of these prayers encourages us to recognise that this tension is part of who we are and to thank God for giving us the gift of life with its many, inbuilt contradictions.

Ìý

One of my favourite ways to think about this is the two pockets of Rabbi Simchah Bunim, after whom my youngest son is named.ÌýÌýHe said that everyone should have two pockets, with a piece of paper in each.ÌýÌýWhen we get too big for our boots, we should reach into the first and read the word ‘I am but dust and ashes’.ÌýÌýBut when we feel sad or that life is pointless, we should reach into the second and read, ‘The world was created for me’. I believe that it’s quite natural to go through these ‘Blue Marble’ moments.ÌýÌýWe can all experience moments at work or at home when we feel a bit superior and may treat others poorly.ÌýÌýFor that, says Simchah Bunim, we need the first pocket ‘I am but dust and ashes’.ÌýÌýBut we all also feel downcast sometimes, disappointed with life or love.ÌýÌýFor that, only ‘the world was created for me’ will do.ÌýÌý
