Seonaid Aitken looks at the tradition of using 'musical quotes' from existing tunes and how these have been incorporated into brand new compositions.
Seonaid Aitken looks at the tradition of using 'musical quotes' from existing tunes and how these have been incorporated into brand new compositions. Hear how Nina Simone weaves Good King Wenceslas into Little Girl Blue ; funk outfit Sly & The Family Stone vibe on the nursery rhyme Frère Jacques and singer June Christy finds inspiration in Comin' thro' the Rye by Robert Burns. We also hear some modern examples of the use of ‘musical quotes’ via the art of sampling and looping. Pianist Richard Michael is on theme with tonight’s Song Book looking at George & Ira Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm, whose influence can be heard in everything from Duke Ellington’s Cotton Tail to the theme tune of the Flintstones! Plus saxophonist & MasterChef finalist Laura Macdonald joins us from her jazz kitchen for tonight’s Cookin’ With Jazz sharing a recipe inspired by Dexter Gordon’s Fried Bananas.
