When 15 Welshmen beat the All Blacks
Peter Jackson recalls Newport's epic 3-0 defeat of Sir Wilson Whineray's mighty All Blacks in the wind and rain of a Rodney Parade afternoon in 1963.
Sir Wilson Whineray took his mighty All Blacks home to New Zealand after their 1963-64 tour of Britain after 36 matches and only one defeat - at a rainswept Rodney Parade against the black-and-ambers of Newport. It's a match that has gone down in folklore and history. Now Peter Jackson talks to three of the all-Welsh Newport team who inflicted the result that shocked New Zealand and hears of the bravery, physical commitment and tactical planning. Captain Brian Price, Brian Jones and the man who kicked the winning drop goal, Dick Uzzell, piece together the match from the preparation to the 3-0 victory and on to getting the Freedom of the City. Extraordinary archive and these new interviews combine to paint a dramatic picture of genuine sporting heroism in the face of what many think was the greatest All Blacks team of the amateur era.
