Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Tomorrow evening will start the first early Shabbat/Sabbath of the season.ÌýÌýThe clocks have just changed, which means that sunset will be at around 4.30pm in London.ÌýÌýDespite the early hour, all of us will be showered, the house clean and the food prepared ready to greet Shabbat with all its pleasures and restrictions. For working people, it’s tough to get home in time for Shabbat in the winter.ÌýÌýI admire people who work through lunch or stay late to make up their hours.ÌýÌýFor those unfamiliar with Shabbat, the rules sound onerous, but visit a Shabbat-observant home and they melt into the background to create a powerful, loving cocoon for 24 hours each week.

Ìý

It’s a reminder about the wonders of Shabbat.ÌýÌýIt’s a day of song, delicious family meals and connecting with God that gives colour to the entire week and, I believe, to life itself.ÌýÌýI believe that Shabbat reminds us that there’s more to life than just ‘becoming’.ÌýÌýWe also need to ‘be’ – to stop creating – at least for a day – and enjoy the world as it is. In ‘The Sabbath World’, the author Judith Shulevitz suggests that Shabbat helps us realise ‘that interrupting the ceaseless round of striving requires a surprisingly strenuous act of will’.Ahad HaAm, a 18th-century Jewish thinker, once said ‘more than the Jews have kept the Sabbath, the Sabbath has kept the Jews’.ÌýÌýÌýI believe that this is because the Sabbath forces us to ‘be’, not just ‘become’ for one seventh of our lives.ÌýÌýI’ve sometimes thought that life can feel like a machine that exists only to oil itself – frustrating and self-justifying.ÌýÌýPausing to ‘be’, ideally for a day, allows us to feel purposeful and reconnect with the values that make life worth living.

Ìý

I suspect that this affects most of us.ÌýÌýWhether it’s constantly working or endless personal commitments, we can feel as though we’re stuck on an endless treadmill.ÌýÌýPeople of all ages find themselves constantly scrolling social media, often out of habit, or compulsion.ÌýÌýThis means that we us are connected continually, which I reckon can’t be a good thing.ÌýI believe that the Sabbath conveys a simple, powerful and universal message. We each need time to just enjoy being with ourselves and with others.ÌýÌýA day, or even an hour, just to be ourselves.
