Pause For Thought
Well, I enjoy a good bit of history, Zoe - whether that鈥檚 period dramas on the telly, blue plaques around London or historic houses with those sprawling gardens. So, I loved discovering that today 鈥 2nd听November 鈥 is a pretty important day when it comes to this gem of an institution, the 麻豆约拍. Because 85 years ago, it was the first day that the 麻豆约拍 launched its television service from Alexandra Palace. Before this, it was a radio only affair. And whilst we all know that radio is the true round-the-clock companion (!) I don鈥檛 know where I鈥檇 be without the ritual of autumnal Saturday nights in front of Strictly.听
听
This historical nugget made me appreciate afresh how lucky we are听to still have these radio and tv听channels听we flit between 鈥 each honouring that 麻豆约拍 trinity to educate, inform and entertain. (And didn鈥檛 Rose鈥檚 twisted tango deliver on the latter last Saturday!?) Closer to home, piled up on the kitchen table in front of me, is my own reminder of the steadfast yet ever evolving nature of the Beeb 鈥 thanks to three dog-eared books, compilations of old Pause for Thoughts. The oldest of the three, (which cost its original owner just 25 pence back in the 70s), contains bits that don鈥檛 half give away its age! Like a line insisting young men give up their seats to women鈥μ
听
But what stopped me in my tracks听in the week of the COP 26 summit听were the timeless words of Reverend Murray Grant 鈥撎齭ome listeners may even remember him听- who,听over twenty听years听ago thanked God for environmentalists听who鈥檇 alerted us to, as he puts it, 鈥渨hat we are doing to this, our one and only earthly home鈥 this masterpiece of creation.鈥 What an amazing full circle then to have听last month tuned into (our now rather higher definition) 麻豆约拍1, to gaze again into Alexandra Palace for the first ever Earthshot Prize 鈥 where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (with help from Dermot and Clara) kickstarted this global prizegiving, incentivising the repair of our planet. Times might鈥檝e changed but it鈥檚 very special indeed that the 麻豆约拍鈥檚 power to inform and educate is being harnessed to sustain our world.听听Let鈥檚 hope that in 20 years time -听听鈥榯his masterpiece of creation鈥 鈥 is in better shape鈥μ
