Pause For Thought: " Individual souls are born into the same family for a reason."

The trees are turning gold, pumpkin-spiced lattes are being sipped in coffee shops and the living dead are taking to the streets. It can only mean one thing. It’s time for the 3rd biggest retail bonanza of the year: the week before Halloween. I have to admit that I used to be freaked out by the whole thing. In fact many Christians still are. But the more I think about it, the more I believe that Halloween can be a fundamentally helpful reminder to us all.Β

Halloween refers to the evening before All Hallows Day, traditionally celebrated on November 1st. All Hallows Day highlights the belief that those who die with genuine Christian faith have nothing to fear from death as they will meet God beyond the grave in a grand reunion. In medieval times it became linked with 'A Danse Macabre' – a midnight graveyard party for skeletons representing people from all walks of life. This evolved somewhere along the line into children dressing up in costumes on the evening of October 31st. Those early Hallow's Eve festivities that personified and mocked the forces of darkness were intrinsically linked to the message of the following day – that Jesus beat death through his crucifixion and resurrection.Β

The Bible strikes a similar mocking tone when it says in the first letter to the Corinthians: β€œWhere, O death, is your victory? Where O death, is your sting? …thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through Jesus Christ.” Laughing in the face of death can be profoundly helpful. It can remind us that death is not the end. It is not something to be feared. It is not a trick. Rather, Christians believe that beyond death is an eternal celebration with God in a place where there is no more sadness or tears. Perhaps after the challenges and losses we have all faced in the last year the idea that death does not need to have the final word on our lives is something we should remember this Halloween. As for me, I now have a week to work out which of my children is going to be a ghost buster and which one is going to be dispensing ecologically-sound, fake ectoplasm. There will be a very large box of treats by my front door if anyone dares knock!
