On the remote and wind-blown Fair Isle, Jimmy Perez attends his mother’s funeral. At the wake, it’s clear that his father, James, is having trouble with his memory, but it’s then that Tosh calls to inform him that Alex Galbraith has been shot dead on his doorstep in broad daylight. Perez asks Cassie to bring James back to Lerwick and rushes back to Shetland.

A prominent lawyer, Galbraith was known across the Isles and notorious for securing the compassionate release from prison of Donna Killick, the murderer of Lizzie Kilmuir.
