Gary Davies sits in, with Ben Platt and Ben Aldridge
Ben Platt chats to Gary about starring in the film version of Dear Evan Hansen, Ben Aldridge stars in the new ITV drama, The Long Call, and Jay Flynn returns with his Virtual Quiz.
Ben Platt chats to Gary about starring in the film version of Dear Evan Hansen. Back in 2015, a coming-of-age musical entitled Dear Evan Hansen, premiered on Broadway, and took the world by storm. It was nominated for nine Tonys, winning six, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Actor for Ben Platt, who is the only original cast member to appear in the film. Julianne Moore also stars as Evan’s mum, Heide Hansen, while Amy Adams plays Cynthia Murphy.
Ben Aldridge stars in the new ITV series, The Long Call, a new detective drama adapted from the 2019 novel of the same name by Ann Cleeves, who was creator of the iconic Vera and Shetland series. Ben spent five seasons as Captain Charles James on the 鶹Լ One military drama Our Girl and had a recurring role in the comedy Fleabag from Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Plus Jay Flynn returns with another round of his Virtual Radio Quiz where he tests the team on their general knowledge to see who comes out on top.
Along with Adam Porter on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Chris Latchem on sport, Gary and the team have the best start to your morning. With celeb guests, quizzes, headlines, tunes chosen by listeners and more music than you can shake a glitterball at!
There's also a Pause For Thought from Laura Marks and listeners on the line as Gary entertains the nation with fun for the family!

Pause For Thought
You may have heard of the acapella group, Jonah and the Wailers. But it’s unlikely unless you live in North London, are Jewish, attend bar or batmitzvahs, or weddings and are of a Certain Age. Jonah and the Wailers is a 5-man singing group churning out Jewish favourites, well, their golden oldie favourites, for over 30 years. The Wailers are my husband Dan, Dan’s brother Ben, Ben’s best-man Phil, Phil’s brother Simon (musical director) and Simon’s brother-in-law, Jo.
This Monday evening, as happens regularly, the group arrived at our house to rehearse.Rehearse is a loose term – it starts with a long, loud, animated discussion about the state of the, or rather, of their world; the shocking state of England’s performance (be it cricket, rugby or football), the threat of nuclear attack, and the challenges of aging prostates, this year adding Covid status, colour coded, surging, or without restrictions. This is invariably followed by food in copious quantities – pastrami, pickled herrings, or poultry preferably delivered, in order not to interrupt the flow in what is loosely described as conversation. This week, the shop bought cheesecake decimated, and whiskeys poured, someone suggested a song, with everyone leaping, or creaking to their feet.Unusually, with one Wailer absent, I was invited to sing along to My Girl even though I only knew one verse.
Music is embedded in Judaism, and precious. At times of celebration, for religious festivals, the sabbath and even embedded in prayer itself, music is integral to Jewish life.As Dans favourite music writer, Norman Lebrecht wrote of his childhood,“Music was our meansof togetherness. Without music, Iremember thinking, would we even be Jewish?”Surveying the chaos in my kitchen, I reflected on togetherness. Whist not my way to hang out with friends, these evenings celebrate long lasting friendship, perfectly crafted for five middle aged Jewishmen. I believe we all cherish and need a means of togetherness and these much-anticipated rehearsals with predictable conversation, hearty takeaway and well-worn songs, is theirs.Eventually, the group departed, to drop each other home in cabs, and with promises to meet again soon despite there being no bookings at all in the diary. But who cares about musical perfection?Friendship is far more important.‘Bookings, schmookings’, said a contented Dan that night. ‘just give me the music and plenty of herring’.
