Tom Daley and Michael McIntyre
Olympic Champion Tom Daley chats to Zoe about his memoir, Coming Up for Air. Plus comedian Michael McIntyre reflects on his new autobiography, A Funny Life.
Olympic Champion Tom Daley chats to Zoe about his memoir, Coming Up for Air: What I Learned from Sport, Fame and Fatherhood. Tom Daley captured the hearts of the nation with his unforgettable medal-winning performance in the London 2012 Olympics. At this year鈥檚 Games in Tokyo, he triumphed to win gold and became the most decorated British diver of all time. In this deeply personal book, Tom explores the experiences that have shaped him and the qualities to which he owes his contentment and success; from the resilience he developed competing at world-class level, to the courage he discovered while reclaiming the narrative around his sexuality, and the perspective that family life has brought him.
Michael McIntyre has also published his new autobiography, A Funny Life. In A Funny Life, Michael honestly and hilariously shares the highs and the lows of his rise to the top and desperate attempts to stay there. From his disastrous panel show appearances to his hit TV shows, from mistakenly thinking he'd be a good chat show host and talent judge, to finding fame and fortune beyond his wildest dreams and becoming the biggest-selling comedian in the world.

Pause For Thought
Well I鈥檓 in a bit of a daze because it鈥檚 just after 4 in the morning here in New York and just a few hours ago I was on stage with Willow Smith in front of 1800 people. Not my usual Monday night I鈥檒l have you know!!! Willow and I recorded an EP together almost a year ago now, in the middle of the pandemic. The spiritual themes in the songs and mantras we put together were incredibly soothing after almost a year of Covid-related loss and anxiety. We conceptualised, wrote and recorded it all in a very short window of time. It yanked me out of my comfort zone and I was all the better for it afterwards!
听
But to be honest I didn鈥檛 think the day we鈥檇 perform it live in front of actual people would come. When Willow suggested that we do one of our songs on stage as part of her current tour, I heard myself saying yes before my nerves could say anything. But speak up, they did, very soon after! All last week my heart has been doing little yelps and leaps whenever I suddenly envision a crowd that big.听听My mind says: 鈥淏ut you鈥檙e only singing one song鈥, then adds unhelpfully: 鈥渢hat means you have 4 minutes to make a fool of yourself!鈥澨
听
Of course鈥 over the years, my mind and I know each other quite well. I know its scripted lines鈥 soothe it with deep breaths, visualisation and mantra meditation.听But the fear of looking like a fool persists. The musician and band leader, Jon Batiste said something I really love about it鈥澨齀鈥檝e failed so many times鈥攊n fact, failing became a part of the culture of our band. We had a saying in the band鈥︹淕et your rejection in.鈥 鈥 There will be endless failures鈥. If you鈥檙e not failing, you鈥檙e not really trying.鈥澨齋o I鈥檓 feeling happy this early morning for trying, for being willing to fail, and for how it makes me feel alive!听听听I hope to be free of fear one day but for now,听I welcome it like a family member that makes bad jokes. I try to tolerate, I try to love, and I keep on trying.听
