15/10/21 - Pig culling, sheep vaccines and NI Protocol
The government is expected to make an announcement on a βsolutionβ to the current problems facing pig farmers - but how soon will it start to have an impact?
The government is expected to make an announcement on a βsolutionβ to the current problems facing pig farmers later today. It's thought the plan will include temporary visas to allow butchers from overseas to work here. It canβt come too soon for pig producers - staff shortages in abattoirs and meat processing plants mean theyβre taking around 25% fewer pigs. Those animals stay on farm and once there is nowhere to put them, are killed and canβt then go into the food chain.
We visit the Moredun Research Institute on the outskirts of Edinburgh, to hear about the latest work being done on sheep vaccines to tackle parasites.
And what could changes to the NI Protocol mean for GB/NI trade in food and farm produce?
