Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I met up with my favourite uncles recently. I’ve missed them. They were my two absolute heroes growing up. Uncle Mike with his T-Rex haircut and blackbelt in karate. Uncle Ally with his hilarious stories that just can’t be true. I left their company like I always do when we meet: sides aching from laughter. Throat ruined from singing. Determined to live more cheerfully like them. Some people are just brilliant at it.

Like a woman I met randomly the other day. She goes to extraordinary lengths to cheer her neighbours up. Walking through her estate on a drizzly day, everything seemed a bit drab and tired. Until I stumbled across her terraced house. It was like a beautiful work of art. The outside of it covered with rows of hanging baskets bursting with glorious flowers. A sea of bright pink, red and white Begonias filled every available space. As I stood there - jaw on the floor - the lady came out. ‘What inspires you to go to all this amazing effort?’ I asked. ‘My flowers seem to make people a bit happier round here,’ she said. ‘I like doing that.’

Meeting this woman and seeing my uncles were timely encounters for me. I’d been feeling a bit despondent. Work and faith weary. Even for a ‘walking energy drink’ as my friend calls me, I can sometimes struggle to spark inwardly. Find the Christian call to a life of ‘fullness’ quite elusive. Even unrealistic at times. It’s why I find the presence of such passionate, joy-filled people so crucial to my mental and spiritual flourishing. I need help to come out of ‘gray exile’ as the Bible describes it - and rediscover life in technicolor. I’ve found few traits more transformative than a cheerful and generous spirit. I think the Begonias lady might agree. I’m told she recently got home to find some local kids trying to destroy her creations. She didn’t angrily shoo them away - but explained how enriching her flowers were for people. How - in a small but significant way - they made their community a happier place. Apparently a few days later the kids returned. But this time for a wonderful reason. They’d come to help her water them. And, Zoe, I hear that’s what they’ve been doing ever since.
