Pause For Thought
Two weeks ago Zoe, I told you about how, the previous night at a wedding, I鈥檇 grabbed a cheeky dance with a bridesmaid, and when you asked for more information, I said: story for another time. Well鈥 I met a nice girl Zoe, IRL鈥n real life. But, before that, like many of my mates, internet dating had kinda been the only way I actually dated. Using the app, I would carefully hone my incredibly superficial profile, as did everyone else, to toe the almost impossible line between: I couldn鈥檛 care less about internet dating because: I鈥檓 really cool,聽andPLEASE LOVE ME. But my experience of meeting someone in real life was kinda different. Because, there was no pretence. After a revealing DMC (deep and meaningful chat), I remember a moment where she held eye contact for a little bit too long. It was a particular kind of stare, which, though I hate to admit it, was a little terrifying, because it said: I know you.聽
It鈥檚 scary to be known, because we fear the person doing the knowing, won鈥檛 like what they see. In the Bible, the 139th Psalm (psalms are kindof like poems to God) says that 鈥測ou created my innermost being鈥, and 鈥淓ven before a word is on my tongue鈥 you know it鈥. Here, the Bible implies that God knows us. Completely. And for me that would be utterly terrifying, except for the fact that (as it also says in the Bible) God has 鈥渓oved you with an everlasting love.鈥 Jer 31:3
Like this girl, I think God looks into our eyes, but despite seeing all the stuff we want to hide from the world, the expression we see on God鈥檚 face is not one of disgust, but love. In a world where apps, and social media encourage me towards pretence, and a shallow way of relating to people, this idea tells me that I can be myself, and be fully accepted. Putting ourselves out there to new people is scary, but maybe, just maybe, when you reveal your innermost self, and the person you want to like you looks back, there might be a smile on their face.聽
