Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

My brother Ed is a bit of a hero. A year or so ago he was punting along the river Cam in Cambridge, when the soft silence of willow trees and bird call was pierced by a scream. A girl from another punt had fallen in and couldn’t swim. Violently flailing around, in the process of drowning, she started to drag down a friend who had got into help. The situation looked dire, but without hesitation my brother Ed jumped fully clothed into the murky water, sprint swam to this girl, who could have dragged him under, and without even a second to consider his own safety, he grabbed her around the waist and pulled her to the bank. In the following hours Ed walked crowded Cambridge streets, receiving looks of disgust as he trudged: soggy, smelly, and hauling around river foliage. But the worst thing, was that his new pair of leather boots were completely ruined. Ed risked his life to save a stranger’s, and I think that’s heroic.

Heroism is a key theme in one of my favourite stories: Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings. I love this story, not just for the fantastic world building and plot, but the aspirational values of the characters, which I think are very rare in stories today. Tolkein wrote heroes who not only fight and sacrifice their lives for the common good, but also form deep and vulnerable friendships, live lives of principle, and battle to overcome their own difficult character traits. And as a Christian, Tolkien drew many of these heroic values from Jesus. In the bible it says God sent Jesus “in order that the world might besavedthrough him”. Jesus wasn’t afraid to stand up to powers that most certainly could, and eventually did kill him. But in Jesus I also see another heroic trait: vulnerability. He would love and cry with, his friends, he would admit when he was weak.

Perhaps heros embracebothstrength, and vulnerability. And people and stories, like Ed, The Lord of The Rings, and Jesus remind me that heroes can and do exist, inspiring me to be better… even if my new leather boots get soggy.
