Pause For Thought
I was going to have such a brilliant week before it all fell apart.
A big old birthday bash away from home,
reconnecting at last with people I really miss,
then lifelong mates coming to stay,
  a curry and quiz night,Â
and at the end of it a trip to see Brighton play,
first day back in the stadium with a full capacity crowd.Â
  Thrilling.Â
I was taking my daughter Ruby to her first big match.
She’s off to uni soon and deserves a treatÂ
after a year of working flat out in a hospital.
Then it all came crashing down.Â
  Ruby tested positive.
  She had to isolate.
  The football was off.
We couldn’t go to the party.Â
  The friends couldn’t stay.
  I suddenly felt isolated myself:
dismayed, bewildered and really fed up,
that everything I’d looked forward to so much had been taken away.
I know other people are going through far worse
  but I really did struggle,
because I’d invested so much in it all being perfect.
  And I don’t think I’m alone.
Because this is the time of year for high hopes,
when the pressure gets piled on.
The sun has got to shine, right?Â
It’s summer! We’re running out of time!
The holiday has got to be amazing after all our trials.
The wedding - if you’re having one - has to be idyllic after waiting so long.
The last weekend before the schools go back has to be the best ever.
But sometimes it just doesn’t work like that.Â
  And then what?
I reached out to a friend for helpÂ
and they told me to count my blessings,
  which was really annoying,
because who wants to be told to be grateful when they’re fed up?
  But the friend was right.
What matters to me most is that Ruby is okay.
My gorgeous daughter who helped save lives in the hospital is back on her feet,
nagging me about taking her to the football again,
which must be her way of saying she loves me.
Saint Paul wrote to his fellow believers,
“Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.â€
  So although I’d lost faith
and my hopes had been dashed
I could look at my girl and remember,
  love remains.
