Samara Joy Take 5
Jamie is joined on the show this week by the jazz vocalist Samara Joy for a Take 5 interview
Jamie’s guest on the show this week is the vocalist Samara Joy, who joins him for a Take 5 interview.
From the Bronx - New York - the talented 21 year old singer is from a family full of gospel musicians, but didn’t properly discover jazz until her late teens. In fact, shortly after falling in love with the work of Sarah Vaughan in college, she won the prestigious international jazz vocalist competition which bears Vaughan’s name, and was quickly labelled as an artist to watch.
This summer, Samara released her debut self-titled album. Backed by an all star trio, it is a collection of carefully crafted interpretations of jazz standards that each have an important personal connection to the singer.
Samara Joy talks about seeing Aretha Franklin in concert as a child, being entranced by videos of Sarah Vaughan and discovering a Carmen McRae classic on a trip to Italy.
