
The beach volleyball semi-finals take place at the Shiokaze Park.
In the women's beach volleyball semi-finals, the US pairing of Alix Klineman and April Ross take on Anouk VergΓ©-DΓ©prΓ© and Joana Heidrich of Switzerland. The Swiss duo are ranked fourth in the world while the American pair are ranked fifth. VergΓ©-DΓ©prΓ© and Heidrich overcame fellow countrywomen Nina Betschart and Tanja Huberli before toppling Rebecca Cavalcanti Barbosa Silva and Ana PatrΓcia Ramos in the quarter finals. The duo from America beat Margareta Kozuch and Laura Ludwig in their quarter-final match.
The winners of the first semi-final will face either Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy of Australia or Anastasija KravΔenoka and TΔ«na GraudiΕa of Latvia. The Latvian duo are ranked 23rd in the world and beat Brandie Wilkerson and Heather Bransley of Canada in their quarter-final and will be looking for a place in the gold medal match. The losers of both semi-finals will face off in the bronze medal match, with the losers walking away empty handed.
Competing for a place to play a duo from either Qatar or the Russian Olympic Committee in the final is the pair from Norway, Anders Mol and Christian SΓΈrum, and Latvian duo Edgars Tocs and MΔrtiΕΕ‘ PΔΌaviΕΕ‘. The Norwegians will be favorites for this tie but when a gold medal match is on the line, you never know what can happen. The losers will contest the bronze medal match at 02:00 BST on 6th August.
In whatβs set to be the standout semi-final of the menβs beach volleyball competition, Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy of the Russian Olympic Committee take on world number ones Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan of Qatar. Being the top two sides in the world sets this tie up to be very high quality. The winners will progress into the gold medal match, which begins at 03:30 BST on 6th August.
