Matt Lucas sits in for Zoe and chats to the UK's soul queen, Mica Paris. Mica made an immediate impact on the UK music scene in 1988 when she released her debut, the platinum-selling So Good album. She followed with more worldwide hit albums and singles, and has collaborated with many respected artists such as Prince and Jools Holland, leading to her to being considered one of the UK’s most respected female singers with the terrific range, power, and sheer soulfulness of her voice. She's playing dates across the UK, performing music from her latest album, Gospel, which mixes classic hits such as ‘Oh Happy Day’ and ‘Something Inside (So Strong)’ and original songs which give emotional insights into Paris’s life.

Pause For Thought

This time on Friday I was polishing my shoes, ironing my shirt and doing a few hundred last minute things before getting married.ÌýÌýI even trimmed the hair on my ears – sorry, a wee bit too much information there…

Nothing surprising or unusual in all of that, but it crossed my mind: do I really need to be doing all this?ÌýÌýAfter all, my wife…just getting used to saying that… my wife, Judith, knows what I’m like, and most of the time I look nothing like I did on Friday.ÌýÌýAlthough, my brother always tells people that in 2010 I was voted the best dressed man … of 1982!

But, of course, if you love someone you will do that special thing for them, go the extra mile, you want to please them.ÌýÌýIf I’d turned up in jeans and a T-shirt she’d still love me just as much …after the bruising went down….

And I guess that’s why marriage is used as a metaphor in the Bible for God’s relationship with us.ÌýÌýWhen you get married you take solemn vows, to love each other for better or worse ‘as long as ye both shall live.’ And I believe God loves me in the same way, even more – he’ll love me for life and longer!ÌýÌýLike my wife…I do like saying that…God knows me only too well, and still loves me.

And so, like polishing the shoes and sprucing myself up for the wedding, my response to God’s love is that I want to please God, I want to do my best…be my best for God.ÌýÌýMy faith isn’t about doing good stuff because I’m afraid of punishment, it’s a response to love.ÌýÌýAnd because it starts with God’s love, there is nothing I can do to make him love me more.Ìý

But, the really radical difference is, that although it is conceivable that I could hurt someone so much that they couldn’t bring themselves to stay married to me - there is nothing I could ever do that would make God love me any less.ÌýÌý

And that’s the kind of love that I and my wife – there it is again! – asked God to bless us with in the church on Friday.
