Pause For Thought
In the Muslim calendar, we have just finishing celebrating Eid Al Adha which is the second of the two Eids.听听Most people are familiar with the Eid that follows the month of Ramadan, but this one is less known. Every year one of my non Muslim friends or family members will ask where this Eid has 鈥減opped up from鈥,听as听if I am just looking for an excuse to party.听
It听takes me by surprise too, and this is despite it being my favourite of the two.
The first time I celebrated it was when I lived in Sudan. I visited friends, attended parties in parks, and cooked Eid specific foods.听听I promised myself once I returned to England I would make sure I celebrate Eid Al Adha with as much energy as I did in Sudan.听
Over the period of lockdowns and restrictions, I spent so much time yearning to be around community, imagining what it would be like to share food and pray together once again. But as Eid Al Adha likes to do, it took me by surprise, and I simply left it too late to reschedule all of my appointments and deadlines, so I spent Eid by听myself at home听in Bristol.听听
I was sad, as it should be celebrated communally.听I woke up on Eid morning sombre, but then I decided I could turn things around.听听I spent the rest of day cooking my favourite foods, I ransacked my house looking for balloons and candles and got all dressed up in my favourite jumpsuit.听
By the time I was ready for my Eid celebrations, the sun had just finished setting,听and听I laid the table in my garden, lit my candles and danced to my favourite songs.听听Hafiz the famous Sufi poet is quoted as saying: 鈥淚 wish I could show you when you are lonely or in darkness the astonishing light of your own being.鈥 This Eid I realised it is not only in community that I shine, I can feel ecstatic joy even when the night starts to fall and I am all by myself.听
