Rosie Turton Take 5

Jamie is joined on the show this week by the composer and trombonist Rosie Turton for a Take 5 interview

Jamie’s guest on the show this week is the composer and trombonist Rosie Turton, who joins him for a Take 5 interview.

A mainstay of the new UK Jazz scene, Rosie first picked up the trombone at 11 and grew up listening to jazz - including the great Abdullah Ibrahim whose records were put on at home by her South African parents. At 16 she began playing with talent developers and music educators Tomorrow’s Warriors, where she met future collaborators and fellow members of London’s latest golden generation of jazz players, like Nubya Garcia and Joe Armon-Jones.

A member of septet Nérija, Rosie also leads her own band and is now following up on her 2019 debut, Rosie’s 5ive, with a brand new EP titled Expansions and Transformations: Part I & II.

Rosie Turton talks about being inspired by Abdullah Ibrahim’s compositions early on, watching beat scientist Makaya McCraven live and recording her latest EP
