Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

The England win against Germany on Tuesday night had our family singing and dancing in our living room. We were blasting out Baddiel and Skinners鈥檚 Three Lions anthem 鈥 always out of tune, but full of joy and passion. For our 25 year-old son, it was a moment of joy unhindered by the years and years of missed penalty shoot-outs that those of our football loving generation remember so听searingly.听So, Tuesday鈥檚 2-0 win against Germany was a wonderful feeling, made more poignant by previous losses.

In the post-match interview, England manager, Gareth Southgate was asked about his penalty miss in 鈥96, and even after 25 years, his response held pain: "For the teammates that played with me, I can't change that. So that's always going to hurt. But what's lovely is, we've given people another day to remember."

Life is full of ups and downs. And I believe that how we react to both is a measure of who we are. It鈥檚 easy to be in arrogant and conceited in victory, and to be aggressive or despondent in failure. Islam is clear about striving to react appropriately to events in听the moment听that they happen. The Qur鈥檃n calls on humanity to be patient when disaster strikes and to remember 鈥 that we belong to God and we will return to God.鈥 If we are insulted the Qur鈥檃n says: 鈥淲hen the ignorant address you reply with "Peace!"鈥.听 And when victory comes, the Qur鈥檃n calls us to 鈥淧raise God, and ask for forgiveness.鈥 All of these things are so we do not overstep the boundaries in how we treat our fellow human beings.

One of the reasons I love sport so much is that amidst the passionate emotions of the competition we often see compassion, care, grace, and dignity. After Denmark鈥檚 Christian Eriksen鈥檚 dramatic collapse on the field the Finnish supporters called out Eriksen鈥檚 name in solidarity. Later in the tournament, Belgium striker, De Bruyne, refused to celebrate his winning goal against Denmark out of respect for Eriksen and the Danish fans. Both stand as examples of dignity in action.

Whatever happens in the England-Ukraine match in Rome on Saturday night 鈥 enjoying the beautiful game with all its thrills and passion, its ups and down, is a joy. But for sports to be truly beautiful it has to be full of sportsmanship. Rather like life really!
