24/06/21 - The Climate Change Committee progress report and Groundswell

We hear the latest recommendations from the Climate Change Committee - reducing meat and dairy in our diets, transitioning to low-emission farming and restoring peatland.

Charlotte Smith presents the programme from Groundswell - a show focusing on regenerative agriculture. She hears about how the system can build soil carbon while reducing costs.

Also, we hear about a new report from the independent Climate Change Committee which says the Government is running out of time to make a difference. It says big promises – like the Prime Minister’s Ten-Point Plan – have yet to be backed with firm policies. It recommends not only an increased urgency to reduce emissions, but also a commitment to adapt to the changing climate, and prepare the UK for the serious risks it faces. Among other things, it suggests introducing either border carbon tariffs or minimum standards to imports of emission-intense agricultural products, and also says more needs to be done to restore peatland. It says Government should encourage a 20% shift away from all meat by 2030, rising to 35% by 2050, and a 20% shift from dairy products by 2030.
