The Outdoors and Mental Wellbeing

Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith reflect on nature and wellbeing.

Robbie Armstrong finds out about magnet fishing, where people hunt for metal submerged in canals and rivers. He meets a group in Glasgow who have found friendship as well as interesting metallic items through their new hobby.

Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland has recently appointed a trail therapy leader to provide courses to people struggling with mental ill-health. Paul MacFarlane takes Laura on a trail outside Dundee and explains how trail therapy works.

Euan tells us a tale of sailing his boat, Tarka, through some rough seas and how wildlife can lift your spirits when a dark mood overtakes you.

Regius Keeper of The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Simon Milne MBE joins us live to talk about why certain plants and elements of gardens have a soothing impact on our brains.

Mark is in Oban finding out about Martyn’s Monday Club. The charity was set up in 2018 after five young men in the local area took their own lives. Now it has its own premises and holds weekly peer support groups. Mark joins one of their mental health walks and chats to some of those taking part.

Helen Moncrieff from RSPB Shetland spends some time in her garden to watch and listen to the birds.

Earlier this week Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Scotland’s Travelling Folk reflected on how nature has inspired musicians and one of the performers featured was fiddler Charlie Grey. Charlie lives on the Isle of Lismore and he takes us for a walk and talks about how important the outdoors is for his composing and for taking time out.

Euan has another mystery bird to tease us with. Can you identify it from its call?
