Pause For Thought
Things are looking up. That was how I was feeling yesterday as I wandered through our localÌýwoods with my family. The sun was out and so were the deer, the bluebellsÌýÌý- and many of my neighbours. Watching my children running around the trees surrounded by a carpet of dappled purple flowers and laughter echoing in the air felt like a little taste of heaven in what has been a challenging year for all of us.Ìý
Ìý
With lockdown slowly lifting, the infection rates falling and the longer warmer days, I dare say a sense of optimism and hope may be returning to our nation.Ìý
Ìý
Christianity’s founding story is about hope in the middle of darkness, death and despair. Jesus lived and died, suffered betrayal, torture, execution and finally death by crucifixion. But Christian’s believe that 3 days later he came back to life, and 40 days after that Jesus’s disciples watched in amazement as he rose up into the heavens. Today Christians around the world mark that event in what has become known as Ascension Day.
Ìý
Perhaps, like the disciples on that first Ascension Day, we find ourselves occasionally staring up - at the sky beyond the treetops, or at our ceilings in the night - and wondering about life and death, friendship and the future. The Bible records that as the disciples stared up at the sky feeling hopeless and abandoned, angels appeared to them and told them that Jesus would one day return.Ìý
Ìý
This hope has energisedÌýChristians for over 2000 years to persevere under hardship. It is the reason why over 2 billion people around the world are celebrating that Jesus is with God his Father, cheering them on, praying for them and waiting to welcome them home.
Ìý
I believe we all need hope, not just in lockdown but for life beyond it. We need hope when the sun doesn’t shine and the bluebells have all gone. The poster for my favourite lockdownÌýmovie, The Shawshank Redemption states: “Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.â€Ìý
Ìý
Things are looking up. Or so I hope. And meanwhile you’ll find me enjoying the freedom of a walk in the woods between the showers.Ìý
