Amanda Whiting Take 5
Jamie is joined on the show this week by the Welsh jazz harpist Amanda Whiting for a Take 5 interview
Jamie’s guest on the show this week is the Welsh harpist, Amanda Whiting, who joins him for a Take 5 interview!
An accomplished classical concert musician for decades, an urge to improvise pushed Amanda towards jazz. A period back at music college started her on a new path, which has seen her tour extensively with groups including Matthew Halsall’s Gondwana Orchestra and play jazz festivals all over the world, from Brussels to Johannesburg.
Amanda’s journey continues with a brand new solo album. After Dark, released on Jazzman Records, takes cues from iconic harpists such as Alice Coltrane whilst feeling fresh and original. The arc of the album is the story of a love affair, brought to life by Amanda and her trio, with guest appearances by acclaimed flautist Chip Wickham.
Amanda Whiting tells us about falling in love with the harp, how Harry Connick Jr drew her to jazz, why Dorothy Ashby was an inspiration and her new record
