Over The Sea To Skye

Gary West takes us on a musical journey to the Isle of Skye, the historic crucible of the great highland bagpipe and its music.

Gary West takes us on a musical journey to the Isle of Skye, the historic crucible of the great highland bagpipe and its music. With at least five hundred years of piping tradition to reflect on, Skye continues to develop and attract pipers of the highest order. We celebrate that tradition with sets from Dr Angus MacDonald, Niall Stewart, Kenneth & Angus MacKenzie and Ailis Sutherland, and our ‘Pibroch of the Day’ is a Skye tune from Sleat-based Decker Forrest. There are plenty of musicians who are pushing the tradition forward too – we hear from Griogair Labhruidh and the bands Niteworks and the Peatbog Faeries, and as a special treat we feature the winning performance at the recent Scottish Schools Freestyle championships, from the Skye and Lochalsh schools band.
