Matt Baker and Jay's Virtual Radio Quiz

Matt Baker, the TV presenter and farmer, tells Zoe about his brand new show following life on his family's farm. Plus Jay Flynn returns with another edition of the Virtual Quiz.

Matt Baker, the TV presenter and farmer, tells Zoe about his brand new show following life on his family's farm. Having grown up on his family’s sheep farm in the Durham hills, Countryfile and former The One Show presenter Matt Baker is heading back to rescue his family farm after his mum had a serious accident. The story will feature in the More 4 series, Matt Baker: Our Farm in the Dales. Matt’s parents, Janice and Mike, live on an organic sheep farm that dates back to the 1600s. Matt still plays a very active role in running the farm, but recent circumstances dictated his role was about to get a lot more intense. Last summer, Matt received a call that would lead him to move his wife and two children north to run the farm. Determined to keep farming, the Bakers knew they had to make some changes. Returning to the farm with his family, Matt was faced with the challenge of keeping the remote farm running and helping his mum overcome injuries from her accident.

Jay Flynn returns with another round of his Virtual Radio Quiz where he tests the team on their general knowledge to see who comes out on top.

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Passover, the great festival of liberation is about to start.ÌýÌýJews all over the world will celebrate the exodus from Egypt, over 3000 years ago.ÌýÌýIn an extraordinary, unforgettable intervention, God overturns the natural order and Moses led the Israelites into the desert en route to the Promised Land.ÌýÌýThink Charlton Heston playing Moses in the spectacular movie ‘The 10 Commandments’.ÌýÌýThe original is much better – it’s all there in the book of Exodus.

Ìý

The focus of Passover is the Seder – an extended family meal.ÌýÌýWe retell the great story, sing wonderful melodies and eat special foods.ÌýÌýMost important, it’s the annual opportunity to communicate the origins and aspirations of Judaism to the next generation.

Ìý

The centrepiece of the Seder itself is matzah – a hard, flat cracker, which the Bible calls ‘bread of affliction’.Ìý

Ìý

The thing about matzah is that you either love or hate it, to the extent that matzah is actually the subject of a unique genre of Jewish humour.ÌýÌýFor example, ‘What do you call someone who gets pleasure from the bread of affliction?’ÌýÌýAnswer: ‘A matzachist’.ÌýÌýBut most matzah jokes refer to its supposed impact on the digestive system.ÌýÌýLike, ‘Did you hear that you can now buy matzah enriched with bran?’ÌýÌýIt’s called, ‘Let my people go’.

Ìý

This love-hate relationship with matzah is natural.ÌýÌýMatzah reminds us of oppression and hardship, but it’s also a symbol of faith and hope for the future.ÌýÌýThis tension appears in the Seder itself.ÌýÌýAt the start, we place a sad, broken piece of matzah on the table as we tell the story of the exodus.ÌýÌýBut once we have finished, we eat a whole matzah to celebrate our new-found freedom.ÌýÌýMatzah symbolises affliction as well as liberation.ÌýÌýAnd that tension surfaces in jokes about matzah.

Ìý

I believe that humour is a healthy way to deal with tensions of all sorts – it can diffuse conflict and it stops us from taking ourselves too seriously.ÌýÌýIt might be a relationship tiff, a spat at work or a moment of conflict with our kids.ÌýÌýFinding a humorous word, especially when we can laugh at ourselves, can diffuse the tension.

Ìý

Oh, and one more matzah joke: ‘What’s the difference between matzah and the cardboard box it comes in?’ÌýÌý‘Cardboard doesn’t leave crumbs on the rug’.ÌýÌýHappy Passover!
