At Sea

One in a trilogy of plays by Lucy Caldwell about the ways families say goodbye to loved ones. Set in a near future with families fleeing from a Cholera-ridden London.

Lucy Caldwell has written a trilogy of plays looking at different ways families say β€˜Goodbye’. At Sea is set in a near future where we find ourselves in a refugee camp in Berwick Upon Tweed filled with families fleeing from a Cholera torn London. We follow three generations of a family as they struggle to hold themselves together in such extreme circumstances. The Father has already escaped to Norway under the cover of night to try to set up a new home for them there, but the struggle gets ever greater and with a traumatised son, a devastated mother and a determined daughter and grandmother, they go on a journey that leaves them no choice but to say goodbye. Beautifully told with wit and heart breaking warmth.
